Christmas Tree Pants Sew-Along - DAY 2
October 14th, 2011
Please join me today for Day 2, and next Friday (October 21) for finishing up with Day 3. If you’re just getting started and need to back-track to my Day 1 - you can start here.
Sew along with me and post your photos each week to the Christmas Tree Pants Sew-Along Flickr group for a chance to win sleigh-load of great goodies from the Sew,Mama,Sew! Holiday Sew-Along. Every photo you post in the Tree Pants flickr group is an entry! All the SMS prize info is at the bottom of my tutorial on SMS.
Day 2 of the sew-along is kind of an easy week - which is kind of relaxing, or a good time to jump in to the sew-along. Though any time is good time to jump in. This week is making 12 sashing strip units.
Eight of the strips will have star points on one end.
Four of the strips with have star points on both ends.
For people makin’ the scrappy version - you get a little extra fun this week… and get to make two 9-patches. Piece of cake, right?!
I have another little bundlette of 5″ strips of a Holiday Happy & Happy Mochi Yum Yum combo - waiting to go to good home. Each Friday of my sew-along I’ll give one away.
Leave me a comment here to enter for this week’s bundlette. If you feel like telling me what your current favorite element or elements (object, shape, etc.) are that you like to see in a fabric is - I’d love to know. I’ll announce the bundlette winner here next Friday - just before I post the teaser post for Day 3 of the Tree Pants sew-along.
Friends don’t let friends have trees without pants - I hope you’ll join me in the sew-along!

i’m so over most anything floral. anything fantasy has got my attention right now, i just started making a pair of pyjama pants from this fuchsia colored flannel with castles and dragons and princesses and knights, with a “once upon a time” story in the background. and yes, they’re for me :D
October 14th, 2011I’d have to say my favorite element in fabric is flowers. I’m a sucker for ‘em! Thanks for the chance to win such cute fabric!! Happy Friday!
October 14th, 2011I’ve seen a couple of quilts lately with house shapes that have really inspired me.
October 14th, 2011Dots!! I love them. :)
October 14th, 2011Lately for me I am all about swirls in fabric-like what wind looks like in cartoons..think frosty the snowman
October 14th, 2011I’ll always love florals, but my current favorite is funky, graphic flowers.
October 14th, 2011I love seed heads and dandelion clocks.
October 14th, 2011I LOVE polka dots, stripes, and swirls. Mostly anything could catch my eye if it is in bright colors like you use! Thanks for the giveaway!
October 14th, 2011I’m really loving small scale geometric designs right now.
October 14th, 2011i like paisleys, argyle and polka dots.
October 14th, 2011I’m currently really loving tiny geometrics that read as solids from afar, but close up have some dimensional shapes, or two or three related colours. Until I’m ready to make the full-on leap to solids, these kinds of blenders are still on my cutting table a lot. And text, of course, I do like some scripted text in tiny, cursive writing.
October 14th, 2011i seriously adore cross hatching.
October 14th, 2011love it.
Holy cow it’s going to be cute! xo
October 14th, 2011I love fabric with words on it, dots, and solids with a small pattern in them.
October 14th, 2011Another bundle, oh I hope I win. Thanks.
October 14th, 2011I’m enjoying this pants tutorial, thanks. My current obsession is circles and swirls, I’m loving the movement.
October 14th, 2011I have a thing for bows right now - but love the japanese style florals too!
October 14th, 2011I love polka dots and lots of ‘em! I have big plans to get going on this tonight. Yay me!
October 14th, 2011Lately, I’m liking huge floral patterns. Your project is beautiful. Thanks for the chance to win!
October 14th, 2011I love anything, as long as there’s color on a white background; stripes, swirls, polka dots, etc.
October 14th, 2011I’ll jump on the dots band wagon. I also really like owls and butterflies at the mo. I think the butterfly thing can be attributed to the fact that I just turned 40 and I’m obviously trying to deny it by liking things school-age girls like - pigtails, skinny headbands, LMFAO songs and butterflies.
October 14th, 2011I’m really liking flowers just now, which is kind of new for me. I appreciate the chance to win some of your fabulous fabric!
October 14th, 2011First off…I’m having a blast on this sew a long! I’ve been wanting to make a Christmas Tree skirt (now pants!) for a couple years now and never really found one that “wowed” me. That is…until this one! I love Polka dots. or anything ‘retro’, like starbursts!
October 14th, 2011My favorites are little hedgehogs and mushrooms, just too cute…or should I say these are my daughters favorites ;o)!
October 14th, 2011I’d love to see a fabric with scissors somehow hidden in the design. Kathie L in Allentown
October 14th, 2011I love dots. They don’t have to be alone. There can be another element with them.
October 14th, 2011Very fond of house shapes, unless the background is icky white.
October 14th, 2011A fox of course. They are the new owls, dontcha know? :-)
Either way, I WANT THIS!
October 14th, 2011I’m getting quite a collection of fabrics with fruit and veggies on them :) Thanks for the giveaway!!
October 14th, 2011Diamonds!!!!
October 14th, 2011Love your colors!
October 14th, 2011I adore swirling almost mysical looking patterns, Probably why I love baltics so much!
October 14th, 2011I like geometric shapes, particularly long narrow rectangles.
October 14th, 2011For myself, I like small flowers, but I love the larger bright florals, fun prints to make quilts for others.
Debbie
October 14th, 2011It’s a tossup between the classic polka-dot and funky paisleys. I’ve been having fun with all the new fabrics out there.
October 14th, 2011I’m really hoping to find more fabric with doilies. There aren’t many out there! That and I’d love line drawings of motifs that could be embroidered.
October 14th, 2011I like fabrics that have layers of color or pattern on them which give them depth and texture.
October 14th, 2011Humm, element…I like triangles and swirls. The pants are looking great! I was at a local quilt show last weekend. When it got chilly, the vendors with tree “skirts” wore them as shawls! I tried to convince one of the pattern vendors to create a cool shawl pattern! I think there is potential!
October 14th, 2011What a great question for you to pose. I’m so surprised to see so many people who think like me…I was thinking people would think my answer was ‘boring’ and lo and behold…gobs of people are in love with polka-dots. I have loved polka dots since I was little in the ’50s…and I also like stripes….I have revelled at all of the colors of dots that are out. I have been collecting many of them for one WILD AND WONDERFUL QUILT…that I will enjoy for all of my days. BUT I have enjoyed many others that are out.
October 14th, 2011If you, Monica make something from….whatever..I am a fan.
I’m on a geometric kick. I just got off a dot kick so I didn’t want more dots..but had to stay away from florals. I started finding fabrics with hashmarks and triangles in them.
October 14th, 2011Then I came across fabrics that have kaleidoscopic feels to them. I love them soo very much.
Dots. Fun, happy scattered flowers. Oh, I want to win soooo bad. . .
October 14th, 2011I am really liking some of the new fabric coming out with antique looking keys on it. I love the shapes that they make. Thank you again for the great tutorial and fabric giveaway!
October 14th, 2011Dots…but really not dots… I like little square dots, and ovals and even little star bursts…some things that read like dots but aren’t… These are looking awful cute!
October 14th, 2011I have always been partial to paisley - and have seen some really cool ones lately. I also love big polka dots - so fun!
October 14th, 2011I’ve just started my third project with dots, and love all retro!
October 14th, 2011I’m dotty about dots! It doesn’t matter what I’m making they always seem to sneak in :)
October 14th, 2011I’m loving japenese cute fabric… Little deers, kimono girls etc.
October 14th, 2011Snowflakes. I’m an absolute nut for them.
October 15th, 2011I have a huge thing for swirls, loads of them. I can’t resist.
October 15th, 2011Monica, you are the most fun quilt blogger … you always keep me feeling cheery. Pretty stuff there!
October 15th, 2011Right now, I’ve been playing with circles. Fabric with circles, making circle napkins (that fold up like origami) and a table runner with different size circles all connected. I think it’ll look cute with summer soda colors in bright pinks, greens and blues (no orange soda please).
October 15th, 2011I can’t resist a fabric with fire hydrants on it! Lately I’ve been having a lot of fun with houndstooth as well.
October 15th, 2011My favorite element is birds in simpe shapes - does that count? Thanks for the chance. Your sew-along is great!
October 15th, 2011Since I am a new to quilting, I am learning the basics. I will say that I love florals especially! Thank you for the opportunity.
October 15th, 2011I’m currently loving circles!
October 15th, 2011I never thought I’d say this, but I’m mad for dots. Every size, every shape, but they are now my ultimate go-to basic in my stash. Love them!
October 15th, 2011Sigh. Polka Dots. I could have 100 fat quarters of polka dot fabric in my stash, and I’ll still be buying more. :)
October 15th, 2011I am into retro and modern holiday - like the pinks and light greens. Would so like to win and thanks for the chance.
October 15th, 2011Love fairy tale images on fabric, japanese, h ross etc:) Thanks!
October 15th, 2011I love the fabrics you’re using it’s almost making me join in the sew-along! My favourite object at the moment is rockets on fabric because I’ve had a request for rocket boxer shorts and am struggling to find the ‘right’ fabric! thanks for the giveaway

October 15th, 2011Into very traditional Xmas colors - pretty reds & greens. But I think this will have a snowflake theme.
October 15th, 2011I love anything with a big print. I don’t know why, but recently I was at a fabric store and realized everything I had was BIG! Then I chop them up and make them into little quilt squares. I love it.
October 15th, 2011I’m a diamond girl.
October 15th, 2011I love polka dots. Thanks for the chance to win.
October 15th, 2011Would love to see fabric with objects from the 1950’s like the housewife cooking in her dress, apron and pearls in the kitchen with the old-timey appliances - in aqua, red and white colors.
October 15th, 2011At the moment I absolutely adore small scale prints of creatures/plants/flowers etc that can be fussy cut into tiny pieces! It’s not so fun sewing teeny tiny pieces… but the end result is to die for!
October 15th, 2011I’m slowly developing a love for border fabrics. It’s my current phase.
And your holiday fabric… I love that it’s Christmasy without being ~christmasy~. It’s subtle. me likey.
October 15th, 2011Love spots and stripes, but am always inspired by new fabric designs and patterns Thanks for the chance to win!
October 15th, 2011Well, it’s hard to chose, but always I seem to be drawn to floral and stripes and dots. Those are my go to for just about anything. I mostly like to make bags with 3 different fabrics and they seem to go best together for me.
October 16th, 2011thanks so much for the giveaway!
I love fabric with handwriting, words, and little houses or kittens. The tinier the better… thanks for the fun project MSS…I am on it! Pam
October 16th, 2011I’d love to tell you my favorite elements/shapes in fabric. But I don’t know it yet. Every other time I find myself drawn to fabric I’m surprised. Wait, not true. I always like polka dots.
October 16th, 2011I am really drawn to Heather Ross style “novelty” prints since I have 3 little girls, but for myself, I prefer strong graphic patterns, like Moroccan prints.
October 16th, 2011Another great tutorial. I love the tree pants. And your fabrics are just wonderful to look at. They always make me smile.
The style I am drawn to right now really is more of color and style I suppose. I love swirls and florals but anything purple with blues always catch my eye. But, a few months ago I started really loving teal/aquas and pinks/red together.I suppose that’s why I love your fabrics so much.
October 16th, 2011I love dots - cannot get enough! And I also love kitchen stuff - spoons, forks, whisks, beaters, etc. Combines my favourite hobbies. Thank you for the giveaway!
October 16th, 2011hmm, fav element — I would have to say maybe jewelry, like charms and rings and necklaces.
October 16th, 2011I still love dots, ya can’t go wrong with dots
October 16th, 2011I so enjoy reading your blog and checking out what you’ve been making! I love your creations and spirit! You make me smile every time I am here :)
I so wish I could have a Christmas tree to make these pants for! It looks so CUTE!
I would love to see small pincushions in a fabric! I saw a patchwork pincushion in a magazine made of fabric with small pincushions print, which was just to die for!
October 16th, 2011I’m currently looking for rock walls–but that’s for a knight quilt. I love novelty fabric–food especially. I’m also drawn to anything with “movement” in it.
October 16th, 2011Dandelion puffs! I love them. I think I have bought every fabric I have ever seen with them (and there are not that many)
October 17th, 2011I’m really into circles. Hard to do! But am furiously trying to keep up with the sew a long!
October 17th, 2011I’m a sucker for butterflies. And veggies. :-D Probably because when I’m not sewing, I’m out in the garden.
I’m only 4 stars in, but I had to take time out this past week to finish up baby boy’s costume. Sashes are much easier, I bet I can catch up this week.
October 17th, 2011You have the prettiest/sweetest fabrics. I wouldn’t even know what to tell you to design. Can’t wait to see it though!
October 17th, 2011Tammy Mabry

October 17th, 2011I am loving vintage 1930’s reproduction fabrics right now!
Look forward to seeing your tree pants come together :)
October 17th, 2011I like botanicals (leaves, flowers) and paisley quite a lot.
October 17th, 2011I have been seeing chandeliers everywhere. From vinyl decals for the wall to scrapbooking projects. I think it would make a neat pattern on fabric also.
October 17th, 2011I like elements that combine to tell a story like 1001 Peeps by Lizzie House or Far Far Away by Heather Ross or collections where each piece combine to tell a story. Also I am having fun stitching week two of my Tree Pants together!
October 17th, 2011I’m on a chair kick right now. Especially if they look like children’s chairs. Especially if they look like children’s chairs from the 50s. Especially if they look like children’s chairs from the 50s in retro colors of aqua and pink or aqua and tangerine. Especially if they look like children’s chairs from the 50s in retro colors of aqua and pink or aqua and tangerine and have little girls in dresses around them. Well, you get theidea.
October 17th, 2011I am not sure what my MOST favorite element is. But I love love love cherries, dots, vintage looking designs, and anything whimsical. I love bright colors and will rarely do anything really pastel. Give me bright, happy, cheerful colors and designs every time and I am a happy girl!
October 17th, 2011I’m loving anything that has anything to do with stories and fairytales. I have a bit of this kind of thing already, but my only issue is that I have no idea what to do with it…
October 18th, 2011Candy! Gimme the Candy! Oh, I mean to say a candy motif would be lovely.
October 18th, 2011Lately I’m attracted to rounded geometric shapes with a 60’s mod feel to them.
October 18th, 2011Dots. spots. specks. flecks. that whole deal.
October 18th, 2011For Me, its the SCHBANG! factor, this could be a flower, the colour, or just because when I pick it up I cant put it down.
October 18th, 2011Elephants and stripes!
October 18th, 2011These fabrics look jummy :)
October 18th, 2011I would love to see more craft related shapes. E.g. floss, yarn and spools in tone in tone colours (as blenders).

October 19th, 2011Geesh, I’ll even settle for some muslin with coffee stains on it…yep, looks like chocolate to me. I’ll “make it work”!!
I have a question about your Christmas tree pant pattern. We are to make seven(?) nine square blocks? Are you going to sew them together with sashing, or to each other? Curious what it is going to look like when finished. By the way, love your colors!
