Christmas Tree Pants Sew-Along - DAY 1
October 7th, 2011
Today kicks off Day 1 of my Christmas Tree Pants Holiday Sew-Along (because not all trees like to wear skirts) at Sew,Mama,Sew!
Please join me today for Day 1, and the next and following Friday (October 14 & 21) for Day 2 and Day 3 of the sew-along.
Sew along with me and post your photos each week to the Christmas Tree Pants Sew-Along Flickr group for a chance to win sleigh-load of great goodies from the Sew,Mama,Sew! Holiday Sew-Along. Every photo you post in the Tree Pants flickr group is an entry! All the SMS prize info is at the bottom of my tutorial on SMS. Good times.
Day 1 is making 9-patch stars. Since I’m like my own Hair Club For Men, I’m participating in my sew-along too! The scrappy version.
For Day 1 we’ll make seven 9-patch stars. Totally do-able, right? So to make it easy on myself, I got a little mathie so I could get all my ducks scraps in a row. This is my formula:
12) 5″ STRIPS OF FABRIC
From 10 strips, cut:
6) 4½” squares
1) 2½” x 12½” rectangle
From 1 strip, cut:
6) 4½” squares
2) 2½” x 12½” rectangle
From 1 strip, cut:
8) 4½” squares
Oh look, I just happen to have 3 little bundlettes of 5″ strips of a Holiday Happy & Happy Mochi Yum Yum combo. Just lying around, waiting to go to good home. Each Friday of my sew-along I’ll give one away.
Leave me a comment here to enter for this week’s bundlette. Maybe I can schmooze you into telling me what your current fave 3-color combo is? I’ll announce the winner here on this post next Friday just before I post the teaser post for Day 2 of the Tree Pants sew-along.
Friends don’t let friends have trees without pants - come sew with me!

Tough call…today I will say grey, pumpkin, and plum. Tomorrow will likely be different! Thanks!
October 7th, 2011Very cute fabric!
October 7th, 2011My favorite 3 color combo currently is orange, yellow and gray (maybe throw in some blue or green too) but very much about the citrine colors!
October 7th, 2011Yay! Can’t wait to get started on this - it’s so clever!
October 7th, 2011My current favorite color combo is robins egg blue, lime green and canary yellow.
October 7th, 2011I’m a little confused about the directions. Why are we cutting 5 inch strips if we then want 4.5 inch squares? Shouldn’t we cut 4.5 inch strips and 4.5 inch squares from those strips? Which strip or strips goes into making the white stars?
++++++++++++
October 7th, 2011This is for if you want your scrappy version to be more planned and controlled, vs just foraging for scraps. The 5″ strip measurement is so you have some cutting elbow room - plus one strip you need 5″ so you can cut two 2½” by 12½” rectangles. Hope that made sense - Monica
my favorites: just about any colors with aqua!
October 7th, 2011Tree pants are not only genius and gender equalizing, but all kinds of awesome! Oh, my favorite color combo (of the morning) is yellow, orange and purple. This afternoon it might be blue, cyan and green.
October 7th, 2011This looks like so much FUN!! I think I’ll go scappY!!
October 7th, 2011I just love green, gray, and white. I just love this block.
October 7th, 2011First I have to say that I love the way you’ve written the tutorial on SMS. Beautiful, easy, freakin’ awesome, lady.
Second, I like that my tree will have pants, even though I (nearly) never wear them myself.
Third, my three color combo right now… salmon, teal, butter yellow. Not sure why, but it’s what I want to be surrounded by at all times lately. New salmon-colored dress in in the works so hopefully this new obsession lasts for a few months.
October 7th, 2011As with the seasons changing, so do color preferences. But…when I am in a store looking at fabrics, I seem to be drawn to turquoise and crisp white.
October 7th, 2011I should probably amend my comment, since you wanted three colors. Turquoise, crisp white, AND dove grey. Today. Tomorrow will be different!
October 7th, 2011At the moment my favourite colour trio is aqua, brown and yellow! Yep I’ve just made an apron in those colours (with some pink)!

October 7th, 2011Hmmm…my favorite is any combo with a true blue…love it with red and yellow, or grey and yellow, and especially chocolate and cream. I am redecorating my living room and you’d be surprised how little blue fabric there is!

October 7th, 2011I just love these blocks–I like the way the star “floats”. My three fav colors change from day to day. I’ve been cutting red and yellow strips and trying to decide if I want to add whit or black to them, or maybe even green. October 7th, 2011Too funny! Maybe one of these days I will learn to get the pictures out of my camera, and then a whole new step, posting to flicker! You would think your contest would help motivate me! I stil love the bright “neutrals” of lime green, fuschia, and another color… maybe white to keep with a neutral palette! It would be terrific to win a bundle so my tree would have pants! Love the look you created for this week!
