5 Things

February 7th, 2013

Recently a “5 Things About Me” meme happily blazed through on Instagram, and now the Modern Quilt Guild is promoting the meme so those going to QuiltCon in Austin can pre-meet before the big event. So fun to read everyone’s, and in most cases some really awesome surprises about people!

1. This is me. Every day is a bad day hair, so when I get that occasional 8 minute window of straight hair from a freshie blow-dry, I jump at the chance to take a pic of the rare hair event. Even if it means I’m bra-less and in my jammies. I will not look like this at QuiltCon - I will look like Hugo Hurley in girl clothes. And wearing a bra.
5 Things meme

2. I hate the sun. I was born and raised in California, then moved to Hawaii. Nothing but sun, sun and more sun. Moving to Astoria, Oregon (the greyest, wettest place in the United States) is my Utopia because I have reverse SAD. Not that I don’t love a pretty sunny day… I just love them in moderation.

3a. I have an iPhone case problem. I didn’t call it an addiction until I rounded up a few of them to take this photo. There are more. Lots more.
5 Things meme

3b. I got an iPad for Christmas. A new addiction is brewing.

4. I once had a really vivid dream about Jon Stewart, so I count him as an ex-boyfriend.

5. I was an extra in the movie The Right Stuff for college credit (I didn’t get paid, but worth it because it raised my GPA). I’m in the big BBQ scene and the fan dancer scene - and I have never seen myself (I don’t even know if I made it on to the film) because I detest seeing myself on video/TV/film.

how do you manage to find so many cute things in a 5 things meme? d’awww your stuff is so cute!
p.s. something is on its way to you :)

  2. The fabulous Angelina allegedly said:

We are a small group, us reverse SAD sufferers. The main thing I miss about Oregon is the grey weather!!!! I hope the dream was a really good one with Jon and I’m totally envious because while David Bowie and I are old friends in my dreams, Jon has never bothered to show up.

  3. The fabulous ara jane allegedly said:

oh, i am definitely a reverse SAD sufferer, too. i honestly get depressed when it’s too sunny. and hey, i was born in southern california, too! maybe there’s something in that? looking forward to seeing you at quiltcon!

  4. The fabulous Jenny allegedly said:

Ha, ha, ha! I suffer from reverse SAD too! There are too many darn hot and sunny days here in Florida. A girl needs some cold and grey weather - it’s more fun to quilt when the weather outside is wicked!

  5. The fabulous Erika Mulvenna allegedly said:

Oh, I love, love, LOVE your iPhone case collection! I expect to see a different case each day at QuiltCon!

  6. The fabulous Kim allegedly said:

I specifically went on your blog yesterday to see if you filled one of these out. Nothing. I’m not going to quilt con, but as your east coast stalker, in need of “ha ha ha” moments, I was really hoping you would do this and you DID! yay :-) Thank you for always making me laugh.

  7. The fabulous Natalie, the Chickenblogger allegedly said:

I did not know, and yet, it comes as no surprise: You are even more fabulous than I knew!

  8. The fabulous Mary Ann allegedly said:

This made me so happy Monica. i have a bunch of phones cases too (albeit not as cute as yours) and several iPad cases as well. My DH mutters its like the fabric piles.”Is not! Monica does it too.” I can say now!

  9. The fabulous Hollie allegedly said:

Your blog always makes me smile! Loved learning some new things about you. Hope we cross paths at QuiltCon!

  10. The fabulous randi allegedly said:

Very fun! And I love those iphone cases. So cute!

  11. The fabulous Katie allegedly said:

That Jon Stewart comment had me cackling out loud! Thanks for sharing.

  12. The fabulous Sandra R allegedly said:

I also despise sunny hot days. I think it comes from being a farmer’s daughter, and working tobacco in the summer. Rainy days meant a day OFF! I love overcast grey days.
And I call mine a bad hair incarnation. Because it is for all of this life time, so far. And yeah, thanks for sharing.

  13. The fabulous crystal allegedly said:

Oh how this made me giggle. I love your case collection! Hehe another reason I should probably not have an iAnything. lol

  14. The fabulous Thimbleanna allegedly said:

You’re so funny! Do you have quilt iphone covers? I only have one very boring one — I’m beginning to wonder if I’m missing a gene. Loved your five things!

  15. The fabulous Wens allegedly said:

Awesome - I so enjoy reading your blog. I wish I was going to quiltcon, I’m sure you’re even more hilarious in person. Have a great time :)

  16. The fabulous Christine allegedly said:

I did want a iphone until I saw your case collection. Now I must have one.

  17. The fabulous Dan allegedly said:

    Hey Beautiful!

  18. The fabulous Angela allegedly said:

Love it all. You are so fun.

  19. The fabulous Jenny Bonynge allegedly said:

I, too, grew up in CA…So. CA actually, and love living in the Northwest. Sunshine is overrated! I hope to see you at QuiltCon… :0)

  20. The fabulous ppam allegedly said:

You are super cute. Love everything you showed! And you. Xo

  21. The fabulous Karen allegedly said:

I am ‘blessed’ with bad hair days as well…you know what though? Others may have it worse :D. Makes me ok with it…

  22. The fabulous Yana allegedly said:

You are so coooooool) I love to read your blog!

  23. The fabulous Eugenia allegedly said:

You are my shero. Totally, get the grey. Even my kids look forward to rain. Everything so green and fresh. Crisp.

  24. The fabulous Cat allegedly said:

love your gorgeous pic and your iphone cases!! Beautiful.

We have the same hair issue. Mine is totally fuzzy except for when I walk out of the hairdresser once every couple of months. I hate spending time blow-drying and flat-ironing my hair so it then spends a couple of months being fuzzy again til its one day of shiny ‘glory’.

And the sun. Hate the sun. Hate summer. Give me cool, overcast days every day of the week. Why I was born and raised in Australia is anyone’s guess.

Looking forward to your Quiltcon instagram pics, and I bet you girls are getting really excited for Quilt Market too, and have loooots of awesome plans.

have a good weekend, Catherine x

  25. The fabulous Charlotte allegedly said:

hahaha! I totally get you on the sunshine thing. I live in South Africa for a couple of years and it really got on my nerves that it was sunny everyday. Made opening the curtains in the morning totally pointless - “oh look, another beautiful day. Sigh”

  26. The fabulous Laura allegedly said:

Those iPhone cases are seriously cute so I can’t blame you. Yet another good reason that I don’t have an iPhone-I actually have to seek out cases for my phone and the picks are usually very basic so I’m not tempted to waste my fabric cash.

  27. The fabulous Mina allegedly said:

Wow, I didn’t know that there is reverse SAD but I really love gray, rainy days. too much sun here in Texas.

LOL, the comment about Jon, just too funny!

  28. The fabulous Cindy allegedly said:

Is The Right Stuff on netflix. I’m gonna have to check.

  29. The fabulous Nikki allegedly said:

I also hate the sun! People think I’m crazy when I say that! Last year when we lived in Seattle I couldn’t understand why everyone complained through the rainy season! (Well, ok, I would have rather had snow than rain. But they complained about the greyness the most!)
I hope I run into you at QC. :)

  30. The fabulous Raesha allegedly said:

Where did you get the black Rilikuma case?? SO UNBELIEVABLY cute!!!!!!! I want one very badly.
Hubby had a dream once that I left him for Billy Zabka - google him- he’s the bad guy from the original Karate Kid. Hubs was seriously PISSED at me when he woke up so I now count Billy Zabka as my secret lover:)

  31. The fabulous Mandy allegedly said:

I love that you consider Jon Stewart an ex! That’s hilarious.
Love your meme. I wish you lived in KY so you could be my BFF :)

  32. The fabulous Shannon allegedly said:

I have reverse SAD too! I get really weary when there are two many days of sun.

  33. The fabulous DianeP allegedly said:

Hello Monica - so nice to learn so many things about you!

Love your iPhone cover collection - really, really cute!

Does reverse SAD come with an aversion to the heat too? I like sunshine, but I hate the heat and humidity that often comes with it.

  34. The fabulous Jane S. allegedly said:

Reverse SAD…heeheehee! I’ve got it big time. I’ve never had a tan in my life, I burn and then peel, so living in the Oregon coast mountains is perfect for me. Grey and green are one of my favorite combinations. That’s what I see today as I look out the window. :)

  35. The fabulous Caroline allegedly said:

    You always make me laugh!

  36. The fabulous Robyn of Coffee and Cotton allegedly said:

Ha! We both have hair that won’t stay straight and we both have reverse SAD!! Can’t wait to see you! 12 days!!!!

  37. The fabulous elsa allegedly said:

Cute photo of yourself and love that you feel the same about the sun as I do! Have lots of fun at QuiltCon!

  38. The fabulous Dawn allegedly said:

Loved your five things, made me smile while reading. Your iPhone cases are adorable and I’m severely jealous here. I also totally understand the reverse SAD, but thankfully dont have. I’m a former north westerner living in a So Cal beach town. Took me a long time to be ok with staying in ona sunny days to do what I love …. Feel I have it all now!!

  39. The fabulous Sue allegedly said:

I’m so with you on loving grey days. I’m in Adelaide, South Australia and summers here are HOT. I love winter (ours is pretty user friendly really) and we don’t get much rain here in SA (we’re the driest state in the driest continent apparently) so I live for winter rain and get depressed when we start to get nice weather again in the spring!

  40. The fabulous Siobhan allegedly said:

I keep telling my husband that we should have moved to Oregon or Washington state instead of Ireland, and then we still could have had rainy, gray weather but without the super bad recession and his mother. I think he objects to the comment about his mother. ;) I have a geographical crush on the Pacific NW and am also a reverse SAD sufferer. Especially anything heat related–high 60s is a heat wave to me. Loved your meme!

  41. The fabulous Christina allegedly said:

Well I love your list. I grew up in Alaska. Went to school in Seattle and now live in New Mexico (where is it too sunny most of the time). I agree about a nice gray day. Also, perfect for crafting.

  42. The fabulous Cherry allegedly said:

I am glad to know there are more reverse SAD people out there. Have fun at Quiltcon - but it will be sunny and hot.

  43. The fabulous SuzK allegedly said:

I loved #4 (I’m a huge Jon Stewart fan). I too did not realize there were reverse SAD people, so I glad to hear you are living in the right place!

  44. The fabulous Rose E. Glasses allegedly said:

I was talking to my favorite 10 year old tonight. She told me, her friends think she is weird. Turns out weird is the new kewl. I asked her about “unique” or ‘bizzare”….she said no, weird is it. I asked her not to go Goth on me…she said she tried Goth with her Christmas Walmart makeup kit from Grandma, the black eye shadow and red lip gloss was not her thing….whoo hoo!
Any hoo.. You are my type of weird. I also like sunshine in moderation.

  45. The fabulous DianeP allegedly said:

    Happy Valentine’s Day Monica!

As one of your Happy Zombiettes, I hope you have a wonderful day!

  46. The fabulous pam allegedly said:

And here we thought we were the only people that ever left sun sun sun and moved to the PNW because we LOVE the rain and fog and drizzle!

Like you said so perfectly - nothing against sunshine - but better in moderation!

  47. The fabulous Jennifer allegedly said:

Ok, there’s gotta be something going on with this reverse SAD thing and Californians!! I am too, grew up in San Diego, and just melt into a sweaty puddle when the temp goes above 65! We live in cloudy WA too, and I LOOOOOVE it! There’s gotta be some science in that! haha :O)

  48. The fabulous Bearpawquilter allegedly said:

I, too, have a serious iPad addiction - reading quilting blogs. I read yours from the beginning to the present along with many others. Yours is really funny. Good thing I’m retired and have time to do this kind of stuff. We have driven through Astoria many times going to and from Alaska. Nice town. Our son used to live in Nehalem. Great state park there. I think you might get even more rain than we do here in Kodiak. We avg. about 75″/yr. Standing by…

  49. The fabulous Andrea allegedly said:

I think the 5 things are just not enough - one needs to browse through your blog to really get the flavour of you. Your blog cracks me up. I’ve taken a break from blogging for a few months just to ‘regroup’ and now that I’m back at it, catching up on everyone - this is one that I truly truly regret not keeping up with. Your talents not only lie with your creativity, but with your wit as well :-) Lucky girls at QuiltCon to meet you!! I hope you have a great time!

  50. The fabulous merrily row allegedly said:

Rumor has it the Ron Swanson won first place in piecing at QuiltCon. Congratulations! Much deserved. Hope you are there.

  51. The fabulous Connie H allegedly said:

Hi Mon, doing some blog post reading (catching up, for I am far behind) and found this interesting one! I love your hair, it’s so pretty. Gee, every day is a bad hair day for me too so I get you for sure. I hope all is going great for you. Seems like a long, long time since I’ve commented here or we’ve swapped howdies. Anyway, have a great day.
Connie (once known as cootie bug) xo

  52. The fabulous SewTara allegedly said:
