Sewing hacks: Gift Card Monsters + Giveaway

August 23rd, 2011

When the nice people at Basic Grey asked me if I was interested in having some fun with their products, and as soon as I spotted these A-freaking-dorable Monster Gift Cards… I think I replied a OHHECKYEAH even before I finished reading the entire email.
Gift Card Monsters

These gift cards holders were screaming to me (one even ingested a fly) to “sew me on to something”.  And funny thing… they said it in robot-voice.
Gift Card Monsters

I thought the monsters cards would be a great “secret pocket” sewn inside a kid’s jacket to hold notes with important or emergency info.  Or keys.   Or money.  Or gum.   Feeding the monster.  Also fun, the monster cards are so great slip-stitched on to the backs of quilts.
Gift Card Monster hacks

Use to put in secret notes - like when your little kiddle goes off to Grandma’s or a sleep-over - and put in a little “I love you” note.
Gift Card Monster hacks

When I give a quilt I’ve made, I usually give instructions like:
- Launder like everyday laundry.
- Do not use fabric softener.
- You better use this quilt and not store it away.  I expect to see stains and wear… signs it’s been loved and used.  Don’t make me come over there and kick your [body-part of choice].  The little monster “pocket” would be perfect to slip the instruction note in to… or just a note, “why yes, this is a quilt made with Kate Spain’s Central Park and Terrain, and backed with my Happy Mochi Yum Yum - and yes… it’s a blog post for another day“.

I think the monster would like to eat teeth. I think it would be a great place to leave a tooth for the tooth fairy. And she in turn can leave money. Very cute!

These are crazy cute! What a great idea for a pocket. Oh the things I could hide inside!
If I had a monster, I’d feed it mini oreos.

Oh, heck, I might just wanna sew one in MY jacket. Could come in handy for somethin’ tiny and fun.

  331. The fabulous Gretchen allegedly said:

Unbelievably cute monsters!!! Perfect for adding to Xmas gift quilts. I would add some Starbucks gift cards. What’s better than some SBux coffee or hot chocolate & wrapping up in a quilt?

  332. The fabulous Nancy allegedly said:

These are sooooo cute! I love all your designs, Monica. I have taught many classes using your patterns that have appeared in magazines. Never realized til lately that they were all designed by the same person - you! Obviously we have similar tastes since I latch on to every new project of yours that appears! I made 20 of your tiny treat totes for a baby shower - in one morning. Very fitting since I teach a lot of bag classes. Told everyone I was making them each a tote bag as a favor! Can’t wait to make a monster now!

    =======================

Thank you for your kind words and excitement over my patterns, Nancy. LOVE THAT! Just wanna make sure you understand that the gift card monsters are not my design or a pattern - and that they’re a product from Basic Grey. One for the Wish I Thought Of That files, for sure! - Monica

  334. The fabulous Roxanna allegedly said:

Those are fantastic…love your creativity…I would have the monster eat my candy stash:)

Love the monsters! I want to put them on the kids back packs!

  336. The fabulous Naomi Ruth allegedly said:

My monsters would be fed a combination of instructions and gift cards.
