Genius
July 14th, 2010
Recently I came upon a new blog on tumblr called Catalog Living - the life and times of fictional Gary & Elaine who live in the pages of our catalogs. Yeah, like who knew Gary & Elaine were even there!? Catalog Living is the hysterical brainchild of Molly Erdman (the actress who plays the “wife” from the Sonic commercials). It’s genius. GENIUS. There’s a great article at the Chicago Tribune about Catalog Living - my favorite part was the quote from Molly, “Wouldn’t it be funny if I put these pictures up and made little captions for them?”. I love that. When I think all the way back to mid-1970 and being in the 7th grade - and we would write naughty captions in the photos of our ancient 1950’s school books - and could now be a success at it? Holy schmokes… it’s like a dream come true!
So now I’m thinking, as Catalog Living skyrockets into internet and twitter superrockstardom… it’s probaly too late to ask Molly Erdman if she could “Catalog My House”. Kind of like Pimp My Ride, or like asking James Earl Jones to record my outgoing voicemail message… but what would Gary & Elaine say/do if they lived in my house. WWG&ED.
If you make house calls, Molly… my door is open. I may have to resort to trying my hand at it. In the last photo, “Liberty and Madison fear being plucked out of the audience during Bob, Triskit and Mother Clucker’s ‘In Hot Water’ performance“. I think I better leave it to the professionals.

You always crack me up….your brain is right there, too!!!!
July 14th, 2010Too funny. The dog looks pretty captivated! ;)
July 14th, 2010Bob stopped eating his delicious hamburger, lovingly prepared by Triskit, to glance disdainfully at Liberty, who said that the chickens body looked like a cauliflower in this photo.
July 14th, 2010I think the dog is the one who put Burger Boy into the pot and is now wondering if red means done and will he taste like meat? lol
July 14th, 2010When I first went to the Catalog Living website a week or so ago, I had to read Every. Single. Caption. My husband thought I was crazy because I kept laughing out loud at the computer. So so funny!
July 14th, 2010O M G!!! You Cannibal You!! And just HOW did that hole get in the pack of freekie looking dolly’s head?? Only the dog knows eh? Sick, sick, sick… AND I LOVE IT!! :D
July 14th, 2010satire is my favorite type of humor. Utah is not the satire capital of the world, however. So I’ve gotta read that blog. There actually is a satirical blog that makes fun of utah young moms. We read that sometimes (my girls and I) and it is pretty funny. Sometimes I think “I hope my blog doesn’t sound like that so people can make fun of it!” Anyway, the pics are wonderfully funny. My fav is your dog looking at the set-up. Fantstic.
July 14th, 2010Thanks for another waste of time! I mean that in the most sincerest way!
July 14th, 2010You hooked me up to The People of Walmart awhile back.
Keep them coming!
Too funny. I am adding both your site and the catalog life site to my blog list.
July 14th, 2010Too funny…I love that chicken!
July 14th, 2010Even your dog thinks you’re crazy. Funny how my girl gives me the same look.
July 14th, 2010ahhhhhhhh more things I MUST READ.. it’s pretty funny!
July 14th, 2010Just popped over to Catalog Living…OMG, so funny…gotta keep reading! :-) “Secretly, Gary had always wondered if all these children were indeed his.” LOL
July 14th, 2010You’re too funny SW1 — definitely the humor in the family. Thanks for the great link — that site’s really funny too!
July 14th, 2010Absolute genius. I can hardly keep up….Could I be jealous of such an uncluttered perfection?
July 14th, 2010Oh my gosh. Is that the JB’s Big Boy?! I haven’t even thought about JB’s in years!
This is totally bizarre, but when I was five or six, my mom took me to her boyfriend’s parents’ home and they let me play dress up in, and keep, all these fancy old stage play costumes. I was wearing heels and fishnets and a boa (um… looking back, yikes) and my mom took me to JB’s afterward. It was in a mall at the time, and this man walked into the mall and started shooting a SHOTGUN into the air! The wildest part was that in the restaurant, it was somebody’s birthday, and while the guy was outside going nuts, this waitress came out of the back, holding a cake and singing “Happy Birthday”!
July 14th, 2010i have to check this out! those pictures make me so happy
July 14th, 2010Love it! Once again, thanks for the hysterical post.
July 14th, 2010“My pots bigger than your pot.”
July 14th, 2010I checked them out….theirs are funny, but your’s are way cuter.
July 14th, 2010OMG, I just fell in love with Gary and Elaine. Truly brilliant. Thanks for sharing.
July 14th, 2010Hi Monika,
July 15th, 2010I recently found Gary & Elaine, too, via twitter…so great!
Love your own catalog pics… & Pams comment cracks me up ;o)
Thank you, Monica, for sharing another great blog. Just laughed and laughed and laughed - please keep sharing!?!
July 15th, 2010Thanks for the nudge to go to Catalog Living. I don’t get those catalogs, and now I see why. There’s just no room for giant balls of twine in my house. I know I’d feel a whole lot more excited visiting your home than one of those plastic places. You have a much more romantic home, what with guys walking around shirtless and everything.
July 15th, 2010Monica…you just always make me smile! And I LOVE the look on your dogs face in the last picture…just like, “I can’t believe this crazy lady is doing this AGAIN” kind of look. LOL!! LOVE IT!!!!
July 16th, 2010HAHA! Your photos are HILLLLLARIOUS! and the dog hahaha!
July 16th, 2010yes, that new blog is HILARIOUS! I love it. And I think you should have a caption contest. That do that in the Washington Post every week. I can’t remember if it’s actual photos or cartoons. But I think you’ve already demonstrated above that you could put together some pret-ty funny dioramas for us to caption!
July 17th, 2010OMG !!!! You just KNOW I love this stuff !!!! I’m thinking that Gary and Elaine have consulted Martha Stewart because they’re such a busy working couple and they’re tired of fast food and just don’t have time to cook dinner every night …. so they took Martha’s adivice and with a well stocked pantry and a few surprise ingredients, they too are having nice home cooked meals AND saving $ too!!!
July 19th, 2010“KIDS !!!! Dinner is ready !”
Hi there, just thought I’d pop in and say thank you to you for the Jingle Jolly Runner tutorial….I just made one for a challenge I’m in….check out the pic on my blog if you have time. Thanks for a great tute. Hugs Naomi
July 19th, 2010Geez, now I have another blog with which to avoid my very important work, thanks! And of it all, my fav is the dog, his face says it all. “Take me away Calgon.”
July 20th, 2010I had a kitchen stove like that when I was a kid. Left it and refrigerator in my mom’s attic when cleaning out her house…that and the fridge I regret not getting…many happy hours playing with it.
August 22nd, 2010I LOVE Catalog Living! Your blogs are great…so glad I found you! Is there a way to become a follower on your page? I couldn’t see a link? Would that make me a Happy Zombie Groupie? Oh…that has a nice ring to it doesn’t it? Have a loverly Sunday Monica! :)
