Little [holiday] House on the Prairie
November 16th, 2008
Here at Casa de Zombie - we’ve not been immune from our economic crisis (anyone wanna buy a house?), and it’s been challenging times for everyone. The silver lining, I believe… is that more and more people are going to “go handmade” for the holidays. Last year I went 100% handmade. We had an idyllic Christmas - no stress, no fuss, no hard$hip$… just love, laughs and fun. And lots and lots of snacky food. It was kinda like living a Little House on the Prairie Christmas - sans Nellie Olson - and we had Uncle Tivo versus Pa providing us with holiday stories. Anyhoo…
I’m keeping an eye on the crafty happenings in blogland for crafty project ideas, and an eye on etsy for handmade gifts. Starting tomorrow (11.17.08), Martha Stewart is having a “Gifts by You” sewing project contest with prizes from SVP Worldwide (Singer/Husqvarna Viking/Pfaff). Hoping I’ll find some great ideas there too. So the wheels are turning in my head, and I think I’m going to submit something - after I saw THIS as one of the prizes. A sneak peek of what I might submit:
Oh yeah, I could make room in our bedroom for THAT. Seriously… who needs a bed, anyway. Or better yet… after we finally sell our other house, I could support our Pacific Northwest timber industry [dreaming out loud] by adding on to our home [/dreaming]. It would be for the greater good, naturally.

Ooooh, that looks so cute from the tempting peek! I can’t wait to see the whole thing! I went to the site that you linked to, though, and didn’t see the contest — where is it?
November 16th, 2008~Angela :-)
the fabrics are very pretty that you picked. GOOD LUCK with the house selling and the contest.
November 17th, 2008Cute fabrics and wishing the photo were more revealing but I suppose I have to wait for more…
Best of luck on selling the house. I wish these economic times were not what they are but such is life.
November 17th, 2008Yeah, who needs a bed. A very tempting prize in deed! Good luck. Your craft colors and fabrics are looking good so far.
November 17th, 2008Girl, I got to play with one of those and I LOVED IT!! Maybe when we move, I will finally have a sewing/craft room and I could definitely make room for that. :)
I can’t wait to see the little sneaky peeky thing! :)
Oh, we got snow yesterday and it’s 28 degrees this morning….WINTER IS HERE!!!! :)
November 17th, 2008Cute peek! Well, I’m not feeling too competitive, but I look forward to seeing what others come up with. Thanks!
November 17th, 2008OMG.. I am loving the sneak peek!! Please show us more!! I am absolutely drooling over the fabrics. I agree, if you win move it into the bedroom. After all sleep IS overrated!
November 17th, 2008Well, I’ll be rooting for you! I hope you win! I’m sorry about the house. I know the pain of unsold houses.
November 17th, 2008Looks fab! I can’t get enough of your color combos!
November 17th, 2008It’s absolutely going to be a Little House on the Prairie Christmas this year. And it’s going to be so much more special because of it! Your sneak peek looks gorgeous! You are such a creative genius as always. I can’t wait to see the whole thing! x
November 17th, 2008How cute is that! Please enter so I can say that I “know” the winner! When do we get to see the whole thing? Sorry about the house selling venture. Not fun times, huh?
November 17th, 2008Ooooh, pretty, pretty! I love those fabrics, can’t wait to see the finished project one day!
Selling a house now must be so stressful. {hugs} I hope it all works out soon!
I just made a little “glam bag”, it turned out really cute, I must say! I’m definitely going homemade for Christmas.

November 17th, 2008Hey Monica, not only are we chopping wood together, we’re trying to sell our other house, too! Actually, we don’t put it on the market until Feb - but I already see the writing on the wall….ackkkkk! Good luck winning Martha’s contest - you CAN do it! Cheers!
November 17th, 2008Love the peak. Very p-pointy and I love the fabrics of course.
November 17th, 2008I totally agree with you in terms of a handmade Christmas! If you’re interested I’ve been posting Handmade Gift Guides on my blog-lots of tutorials for everyone on your list!
November 17th, 2008Ooooh Ooooh….what is it??? A quilt? A bag??? Can’t wait until you can show us!
Good Luck!!!
November 17th, 2008you are killing me with your sneaky peek-y. I do hope you’ll win. Good luck!
I’m also going handmade this year. Just in case I can’t get all my gifties done in time for Christmas (I’m spending waaay to much time on flickr these days and with my dolly peeps), I’ll be passing out handmade I.O.U cards ;P!
Call me Kay (or is it Kaye?). I have to tell you about the hairy ovaries (teratoma). Ooops! I just did. There, something to occupy your mind for just a sec. Mwahahaha!
November 17th, 2008Recession or no recession, it’s handmade forever!!!!
November 17th, 2008Oh wow, I could have that show up at my house and not mind at all! ALong with everyone else - simplifying at the Beehive here too. Although it seems like a vicious circle. Not sure how we get out of this!
November 17th, 2008So cool that we’re the first to see the winning project! Anything with prairie points should automatically win!
November 17th, 2008What a fun contest Martha is throwing ! I’ve definately been thinking about a handmade holiday this year (actually I thought about it every year since I learned to sew in 4th grade …. I just never got the oranized part of that down to a science …. so I resorted to giving everybody their unfinished handmade gifts as “do it yourself kits” … pattern, thread, fabric and notions all included ! … along with my best intentions!!) Anyhow,I’ve got ideas for almost everybody, but now that my boys are teenagers and dirtbike riders, I’ll have to ask Martha what in the heck could I possibly make them handmade ? Maybe she could give me a crash course in changing the oil or adjusting the rear brakes or making slip covers for the seat?
November 17th, 2008P.S. to my above commment (cause I blabbed too much to fit this part on there)…..LOVE that very cheerful and cute sneak peak of your project!…and when you win and they bring that whopper of a prize into your house, just calmy tell your hubby that sleeping on the backseat of the car will be just like camping!! He’ll love it!!
November 17th, 2008Handmade is the best! I can’t wait to see what you are up to. The little hamster wheel in my head was spinning away last night while I was trying to sleep. Too many ideas…
November 18th, 2008Well heh, hand made, home made is the best. One year my whole family did papier mache items and that was almost 40 years ago and some are still in existance!
November 18th, 2008I made 18 pairs of “happy feet” one year all the socks looked like they didn’t match, but sizes did and everyone loved them. It is almost time to start doing that again.
My senior centre is always begging me for the “happy feet” as they sell them for $10.00 per pair.
The kids wear them at the cottage and they all have “happy feet” Simple pleasures eh.
This is referring to your previous blog, but i didn’t know how far back you read comments. Anyway, I grew up in Kansas City and knew many of the McKIm family. For that reason I ordered the Roly Poly circus book this summer when I came across it. Yours is amazing and makes me want to get the book out right now! Thanks for sharing it.
November 18th, 2008Thank God that twit Nellie Olson wasn’t at your Christmas festivities!
November 19th, 2008My crafty Christmas idea’s this year have proven to much for me. I can’t seem to finish anything! Never fear, we still have 6 weeks or so (less, I guess!) to go. Pretty sure I won’t be submitting anything to Martha’s little party. It’s fine, my friend Monica’s going to win that fabulous prize!
I agree, I think people are going “green” and handmade, after what we saw Saturday! It was great to meet all of you, BTW! Oh, and I know this great carpenter when you get ready to build LOL. Seriously, about construction, I’m just thankful that my husband is working, I was afraid people would quit building, but so far, so good, my husbands’s still working! Karen
November 23rd, 2008Oh my gosh, the colors! I nominated you for an award over on my blog.
November 23rd, 2008My husband and I are making gifts, for the most part, this year. I started buying stuff before the economic stress times happened, so I’m a little ahead of the game. I have some quilts I’m making, and some hand bags. I’ve been looking at the one you made for Quilts and More. I’m still trying to decide. Anyway…I love whatever it is you’re going to submit to Martha. Good luck and I hope you win that quilting machine! Maybe the hum of it will lull hubby to sleep and he won’t notice a thing!
I feel bad that you haven’t sold your house yet.
Have you checked to see if St Joe a Go Go is still hanging around?
Happy Thanksgiving!
November 24th, 2008I am sorry you haven’t sold that house YET!?! People don’t realize that the wonderful and talented HZ once lived there, or it would be snatched up right away. Did you leave some of your crafty aura around the other house, or take it all with you to the new one? Since we’re on the subject, do you bottle your crafty aura? I’d buy some!!!
December 5th, 2008I KNOW you will win Martha’s contest!! How could she not choose you? The sneak peek is loverly!
