Seein’ Stars
March 12th, 2008
Idol chatter… I gotta talk about American Idol. Just gotta. I see stars! What an amazing group this year (and some not so amazing to me - Cruella de Rocker). I adore David, though last night’s performance wasn’t his best I thought, bummer - but I trust he’ll bounce back. I also think Brooke was amazing and I think she’s got a pure and true love for singing. I had leaky-eye listening and watching her (and I loved how she took a shoe off to play the piano… just like most of us do when we sew on the sewing machine!). Loved Chikezie’s performance, song and style! Plus, I have a fantasy he’ll make it really big and will take on a duet partner named Macaroni. My other faves are Carley, Michael and Jason. I like Syesha too, and think she’s as cute as a button. She’s Hello Kitty come to life (you’re shakin’ your head agreeing with me).
I’ve been meaning to post about my quilt in the latest issue of Quilts & More, but have been under the weather with that cold that’s going around. You’ve either had it, are having it or you’re about to have it. It’s a doooooozie! Luckily I have my very own publicist and cheerleader who cheered me on even before I got an issue myself (how does Pam always get things first???!). Giant mahalos to my other cheerleaders on the squad too. Thank you Nanna Jamma, Cyndi, Connie, Lisa, Wendy, Anna, Vickie and Amy!
I see stars… do you? Maybe if you click on my graph drawing you can see them. Q&M has named my quilt Spice is Nice (which I think is a great name), but I’ve named my quilt Peek-a-Boo Stars. I love the fabs I used, but kinda hard to see the stars hiding in there. Olly olly oxen free!
Another change made for the issue was going from row construction instruction to block construction instruction (makes me wanna sing Conjunction Junction, what’s your function after typing that). For this quilt I set it using row construction. Much easier to get the stars where they belong and still keep all the hair on your head. If you look at my graph drawing, you can see my row setting. E-z cheezy, macaroni and chikezie.
And other stars… some hometown loggers are starring in AxMen on the History Channel. I’ve been obessed watching the loggers log the storm damaged forest across the street from me, and now I can watch on tv some other parts of Clatsop County being logged too. Who knew loggers would be tv stars! Well, I did, actually.
Hmmm… interesting epiphany of mine. Thom Beers the creator of Deadliest Catch and AxMen… features many of our local fishermen and loggers - just like our local high school mascots… Astoria Fishermen, Ilwaco Fishermen and Knappa Loggers. Are the Seaside Gulls next? Sorry Mr. Beers… I beat you to the punch. Ga-head, the Tillamook Cheesemakers are all yours.
Feeling a little Perez Hiltonishy with this post. And now I must nap.

I love your post. Such fun!
March 12th, 2008I was going to email you about your “appearance” in Quilts&More. Congrats! I love the quilt. It’s on my list.
You are so funny. I love your humor and style. What a great post. You say what I think. And its exciting to see your quilt pattern published. That Pam. She’s got her pulse on the whole quilting world.
March 12th, 2008Rah-rah-shish-boom-bah! GOOOOO MONICA! Love the quilt and I have often wondered myself how Pam gets a hold of things first… Hmmm… bet she’s got friends in high places! :)
March 12th, 2008Yeah, I got that issue. I, of course, bragged to the ladies at the quilt shop that MY FRIEND designed that quilt. They’re very impressed that I know someone famous, I’m sure. :) tee hee
I’ll have to watch for AxMen. I love shows like that. I can’t believe they are still working on the storm damage. Wow.
I’m sorry, I don’t watch Idol (me ducking). I watch House, and I only need one show a week.
March 12th, 2008Way to go, Zombie! I’m picking up a copy on Friday, hopefully.
March 12th, 2008OMG I saw the promo for the Ax Men where the guy has like way fewer fingers than he started with and it scared the.. well it scared me.
I’m sick to. And I want to be well. And kick this kleenex addiction I have going on.
xo
p.s. is it just me or is that Please also note area getting bigger and bolder?
March 12th, 2008Loved the issue and the quilt! I can’t seam—tee hee to put it down. I just posted something I made from that issue and love it. I just love reading your posts. You make me laugh!
March 12th, 2008I will admit to not being an American Idol watcher, but I definitely enjoyed your “Idol” chatter! LOL!!
March 12th, 2008It figures that I’m waaaaaaaay behind on talking about your name in the Quilts & more. I am proud to be a member of your cheerleading squad!! How does Pam get all the news first? She’s a VIP in the quilting world, obviously! I also thank you for the insights into your creative mind - can I move in there? One would never be bored inside your fertile brain!
I am definitely looking forward to watching Axmen - I love The Deadliest Catch, so I’m ready for this new show. And, it stars Astorians - how cool is that?
I agree with you on every count of last night’s AI. Brooke seems the most down-to-earth-real to me. The Cruella rocker girl–yegods; that hair has got to go! Makes her look almost as old as me!
March 12th, 2008NO, I will NOT be getting sick! WILL NOT.
I went to Borders last week specifically to flip through all the BHG quilt mags and find you…hadn’t taken copious notes from Pam the Publicist’s post so wasn’t really sure what I was looking for. :-P Thanks for the further deets :-)
Loggers…they’re nuts. That’s about all I can say on that. The father of my most recent grand-baby had his pelvis crushed last year…about two months before he impregnated my daughter as I figure it, and he’s right back to doing the same job! Nuts.
I’m with ya on the American Idol chatter !! I was SO relieved tonight that our sweet little David A. was spared!!! ….. and I LOVE Brooke …. anybody that sings Carol King and Carly Simon is OK in my book! …. oh … and forget that Cruella chick …. and can you imagine being in the hospital and having her as your NURSE !!!!(I’m not saying she isn’t qualified …. but that HAIR!!! YIKES !!! you might wake up from a nap and think you’re in the morgue!) …. oh, and I also liked that guy that sang “all the lonely people , where do they all come from ….”
…anyhow …. Kid #2 was watching that Axmen thing the other day …. I didn’t realize that was your neighborhood!
….Hope you feel better soon!
March 12th, 2008Got my copy of Quilt & More the other day and was showing you off at work! Friday I have a late sew with my Monday ladies (I know it’s confusing), and you will be joining us for sewing and I am sure you will be passed all around. Aren’t you tired all ready! I am lovin American Idol this year..lots of great singers….I think for me right now
March 13th, 2008Carley is my very favorite, but have to say I could change my mind by next week!!!!
Je ne parle pas anglais mais… Très joli blog, de jolies couleurs, de jolies créations, belle mise en page, très bel univers :-)
March 13th, 2008A. I have conjunction junction on CD (I actually have ALL of those CDs - & I downloaded them onto my MAC!)
March 13th, 2008B. I have seen the AX men ads on TeeVee (We watch too much History channel) & all I can say is - WOW! (If I chopped off my big toe with a chain saw, I would now be showing everyone - I’d be keeping that little seacret to my self, just saying…)
Oooohhhh, I found them. I found the stars. It took me in a minute in the quilt but I found them! You did an amazing job with this one. As you do with all things you touch. I get so happy when there is a new post here, then I spend another hour just browsing over and over. Thanks Monica, for sharing all your creativity! Love Stacy
March 13th, 2008When I saw the magazine I grab it off the shelve and quickly found your quilt. I enjoy telling my quilting peeps this quilt is designed by my friend.
March 13th, 2008You did a Fantastic job!
I have the magazine–and I LOVE your quilt! Thanks for the sketch, too, I agree with your row construction.
ABSOLUTELY FABULOUS!!!!!!!
March 13th, 2008I hate to say it but I like the rocker girl. She can change her hair after she becomes famous. She is so free on stage. I think she is a cool chic.
March 13th, 2008I had the crud last week, too. I think I got too close to the computer screen. Nasty business - kept me away from work for 4 days. My family no longer looks at me with pity as I cough grasping for air - a lot of eye rolling with “aren’t you about over this thing yet?!?” They forget that I may have to nurse them back to health - my idol, Nurse Ratchett from One Flew over the Cuckoo’s Nest. I love the quilt - you multi-talented lady!
March 13th, 2008You just keep getting famouser and more famouser alls the time!!
BEaUtiFul Quilt! So Spicy!
:D Love the Mac and Chikezie!! His performance was my fave this week.
Still promising you an email. Life has been, well very lifey lately…read between the lines… not so fantastic.
March 13th, 2008Peek-a-boo!
March 13th, 2008I’m glad you’re feeling better.
You ROCK, HZ! Big congrats!
Have fun this weekend!
wow, I remember looking at your quilt in the mag, but did not put it together with your site. (I’ve been lurking). Also, my DH and I have seen the logging show a couple of times now. Can’t believe it is in your “backyard”! I was amazed with what “logging” really is. One of the guys on the show says that people think of Paul Bunyon, but logging is way different now. Those men do an amazing job.
March 13th, 2008Great post!!!!
March 14th, 2008I hardly ever watch American Idol, but my daughter was watching it the other night, so I joined in. I love Jason!!!!!!
I’m on my way to Oregon next week & am so excited!!!
Oh the quilt is lovely!
I get a little frisson of enjoyment every time the logging trucks trundle past on Hwy 99. This is not something you see nearly as often in CA. I’m not saying that logging is the best thing ever, but we sure do all depend on that industry for our comfort.
There’s something rugged and timeless about logging and when the trucks pass you here the logs are always damp and smell good.
Hey, where’s your 100 list?!
March 14th, 2008Whaddya know - I saw that quilt in the mag the other day and marked it as a Gottado, and today I find you - what a coincidence! I love those colors, no matter what it’s named; it’s beautiful! Love your blog, what a great read -
March 16th, 2008I’m in Northern CA and we are surrounded by the loggers also; they are for sure a rough, crazy and macho bunch.
Loved your quilt in the mag.
March 17th, 2008Brooke and Jason are my faves! I met Brooke a couple of times when she was just a teen. My sons best friend was her vocal coach and she was staying in LA at my moms house for awhile. She was a very sweet girl and has become a beautiful, talented lady. And Jason, well, he’s just a cutie!
bah ha ha ha! Macaroni and chikezie! Funny!
March 17th, 2008You are so fab and that quilt is gorgeousity itself. But what are the blocks going to be? Because the stars interlock, yes? So your blocks would have to be, what, all corner squares? I just know I wouldn’t be able to do that without messing it up. I like your way better! :-)
March 19th, 2008Congrats!
~Angela
Hi Monica,
April 7th, 2008I just got my copy of Quilts and More (well, it sure takes time to send it to Iceland) and I noticed your pattern right away, it’s realy beautiful and I love the “hidden stars” in it :) - Keep on the super job, you realy inspire me, thank you :)
This magazine just got to my newsagent today (in Australia). I love your quilt and was totally inspired. I have never fallen for a quilt so badly before. I must make it but am having trouble rounding up the fabrics. Did you use charm packs for the main squares?
April 21st, 2008Hi! I just stumbled across your blog from alltop.com, and just read your post that mentions your quilt in the Quilts and More issue … I can’t believe it! My sister bought that issue and I have been putting together that very quilt for the last 4 days! Fantastic design! I’m having so much fun making it.
May 5th, 2008hi again! i just blogged about my “Spice is Nice” quilt! I posted a picture, although I’ll have to take another once it is quilted, because the colors didn’t come out very well. Anyway … it was so much fun stumbling across your blog!
