Random Randomness

May 25th, 2007

I’ve been tagged by Cindy, Tiff and That Silly Lil’ Doe with a 7 random facts about me. I like so much the way Pam did hers, and then Elizabeth did hers… I’m going to carry on the idea! I’m not sure if it’s supposed to be random facts or weird random facts… either way, I’m weird and this is the short list.

1) I’m easily amused. Simple pleasures for simple minds??? I listen to Adam Carolla’s radio show in the mornings. In my house in OREGON, for best reception I listen to his show on the Seattle station. In the car, when I cross the river into WASHINGTON, for best reception I listen to his show on the Portland station. This amuses me to no end. I know I can listen online at home, but how amusing is that?

2) I love going to the dentist to have my teeth cleaned. It’s a Spa Day for my teeth. And when the hygienist reclines the chair back and my feet are higher then my head… PRESTO - instant tummy tuck for 30 glorious minutes!

3) I love the rain and stormy weather. Too much sunshine and I get reverse-SAD. I love sunshine for gardening, eating outside, outdoor quilt shows, picnics, campfires and camping… but I also need a good balance of cozy rain.

4) I love riding on a school bus. The bumpier the road the better. Hills and valleys… euphoria.

5) I can’t sit still. Even writing this post I think I’ve gotten up like eight times. I also need to keep my hands busy when I watch TV. If I didn’t quilt or do redwork, I couldn’t just sit there and watch (sans Lost… I totally focus on that). It’s why I think I don’t like going to movie theaters… because I can’t do handwork there (hey, you in the back… turn off the @#$%! Ottlite).

6) I hate going grocery shopping. BUT… once I’m there I linger. I read labels, smell shampoos, spend 10 minutes picking the best mushrooms, spend 15 minutes searching for the forgotten item I needed most (and still not find it only to remember what it was the minute I pull into my driveway).

7) I have favorite parking spaces at various establishments. When I find one of “my spots” open it’s like I won the lottery. Another example of #1.

I realize no one is reading my words as I’m sure you’re all under the influence of this yummy fabric and are currently in a cotton coma. I can almost hear, “get to the part about the fabric!”. This glorious stash of 30’s fabric belongs to my sister-friend Karen. You know you want it… I DO! I’m trying to catch up, so a lot more trips here are in order! I mentioned in an earlier post about the fun time we had folding these fabrics and that it was from Karen that I learned the cool folding method by Lois Hallock that changed my life. Lois’ book Creating Your Perfect Quilting Space is a MUST HAVE BOOK for anyone who creates with fabric. I BET there’s not a fabric lover out there who wouldn’t have been thrilled to help fold this! It truly was a privilege (and I’m tempted to sneak in and mess it up so we can do it again).

This is Karen’s new studio (I call it Casa de Washtub) and it’s a paradise! Heaven on earth. Karen and her studio are profiled in the Spring 2007 issue of Designers’ Quarters magazine. Don a bib… you’ll be drooling!

LOL, you were totally right about the cotton coma. The whole time I was thinking “what are we talking about? where we were again? WHAT IS ALL THIS FABRIC THAT I MUST HAVE????” LOL

  2. The fabulous beki allegedly said:

    Oh that fabric, glorious fabric!

  3. The fabulous May Britt allegedly said:

Oh I love these bookshelf with fabrics. What a dream to use some of this.
I agree in #5, I cannot sit and watch tv withouth something to stitch on. I always bring some sewing in my bag in case I get some time to sew

  4. The fabulous Tami allegedly said:

That’s such a beautiful display of fabric … so nice and organized. I almost think that it’d be hard to dive in and mess it up when doing projects.

  5. The fabulous ~ robyn allegedly said:

oh my oh my oh my!! I want that fabric sew bad. It is not available in the nearby stores so I will have to order online. AND I sooooo relate to your grocery shopping system. I hate going but once I’m there I get mesmerized! Especially at Whole Foods Mecca here in Austin..Oy!! No wonder it is called “Whole Paycheck” around here. BUT OMG the food!! I have become a food snob!! And yes… you must sniff and smell before you buy any lotion or shampoo. I just today bought a vanilla orange lotion…yummy! And I don’t usually like vanilla products. Listen to me! I am so blog hogging!!

  6. The fabulous kirsty allegedly said:

Now see, that school bus thing? That IS JUST PLAIN WEIRD ;-)

I have never seen a stash quite like that one!! How does she stand restricting herself to just those fabrics? Or is that just the 1930’s section and my heart would do backflips if I saw the REST????

  7. The fabulous Deanna allegedly said:

I am a total sniffer too (that sounds a bit pervy, doesn’t it?)…I love to smell all the lotions, soaps, shampoo..ESPECIALLY at “whole paycheck”-I can smell some of those ginormous bars of soap for hours!

And that fabirc? I nearly swooned whan I came to the last picture…I have a better word, but not for mixed company… ;)

  8. The fabulous Pam allegedly said:

I’M NOT FOLDING AND YOU CAN’T MAKE ME.

  9. The fabulous Diane allegedly said:

How nice to get to know you better. I have a friend who knits in darkened movie theaters and at stoplights (when she is driving. I kept studying the photo of Karen’s studio full of luscious fabrics, wondering why it looked so familiar. I’m a proofreader for Designers’ Quarters Magazine. Diane

  10. The fabulous Barbara C. allegedly said:

Oh my gosh, I think I’ll take up quilting just to amass such a fortune. They are so YUM!!!
Like you I love to have my teeth cleaned. Of course I have two dtrs who are hygienists so it’s just like family. I remember when I’d be one of their patients when they were students and it would take them eight hours to do my teeth. Mother Love!
    Barbara C.

  11. The fabulous msjan allegedly said:

Cotton coma indeed….I thought I had a ton of ’30’s and I’m jealous! I hate too much sun as well–rainy days are great for sitting in and sewing and sewing and sewing.

  12. The fabulous Darlene allegedly said:

I’m in AWE of your random silliness and the fabric in Karen’s stash. It’s so pretty!

  13. The fabulous Mary allegedly said:

I love the grocery store! Especially Whole Foods. It’s a haul to get there from where I live but I could spend hours in there.

That fabric stash … WOWSA! It’s just so yummy and pretty and scary, all at the same time. (And count me among the fabric-folding converts — love it! Plus, hubby is much less likely to notice new fabric when it’s folded and stacked with its sisters.)

  14. The fabulous katie allegedly said:

    I love your list!!

And you helped fold those fabrics? I don’t know if I could have resisted putting some of those pretties in my pockets to take home! Guess I’m not getting invited to any folding parties now.

  15. The fabulous raesha allegedly said:

Holy cow….I showed these pictures to hubby and he said “why can’t your stuff look that nice”:): )Yes, he’s a charmer.

  16. The fabulous Michelle allegedly said:

Cotton coma indeed! My goodness. I too love the rain - which is why I always tell my husband I’m moving to Oregon one of these days.

  17. The fabulous Sarah allegedly said:

I just drooled all over my keyboard!

  18. The fabulous Doe allegedly said:

Can’t seem to focus on your list.LOL! I have a drool bucket around my neck but I might need a bigger one! That is one fabulous bookshelf of fabrics. Yummy! I could sit in front of THAT for days! 30’s overload? Nevaaahh!!!!

BTW, I actually like going to the dentist. It relaxes me. Weird huh?! As soon as my bony ass touches that recliner and with a blanket and a pillow, I’m off to la-la land. I’ve been known to take a nap during a procedure. With a bite block, of course! I once bit the dentist’s finger by accident…well, i’ll tell you all about it later! lol!

Thanks for sharing Monica! Love, love, love it!

  19. The fabulous Karen allegedly said:

I’ve been checking your blog everyday, and was so happy to see your latest! You really make my stash look good–and I mean that two ways–you folded it and you photo-ed it!
For years, I thought I was the only one who got crabby if there was sun too many days in a row. Nice to know I’m not alone!

  20. The fabulous Sarah Jayne allegedly said:

Love the list of 7 random things about yoo - and you were right I was distracted by the fantastic fabric.

  21. The fabulous Nicole allegedly said:

Man, I was SO distracted from what you were saying… Maybe there is something to all that fabric folding. The results are so appealing. Maybe if I get into kind of a zen trance I could get through the mountain of fabric in my closet!

  22. The fabulous Pieces allegedly said:

Ha! You are so right about the fabric. I would read one of your things, think about a response, scroll down, gaze at the fabric, and immediately forget what I had read. So I had to go back and review.

    Tummy tuck–haha!
    School bus–weird!
I hate going to the grocery store too. But I still hate it when I get there. The best thing in life? Free Safeway delivery. The angels sing when the delivery guy loads my groceries onto my kitchen counter.

  23. The fabulous Kim allegedly said:

I was fortunate enough to hear Ms. Hallock speak at my guild. A week or two later I folded my stash (minuscule in comparison to those photos)that way.

I have my favorite spots at a few establishments also.

  24. The fabulous Carol allegedly said:

We may be somehow related or perhaps we are keeping some sort of weird balance on the east and west coasts of our country (I’m in CT)…… I am so right with you on numbers 1,3,5,6, and 7!
The fabric pictures made me swoon, I want to pet it.

  25. The fabulous Wende allegedly said:

Heh, Pam’s comment made me giggle. Stay strong, Pam. :D

I have no storage to fold any fabric that way. Trust me, it’s just not as impressive stacked up on a day bed. :D

  26. The fabulous Candace allegedly said:

ohmygosh I’m totally lusting after that fabric - it’s total happiness!!

  27. The fabulous cindy allegedly said:

Um, yea, I thought that was all your fabric. So, now I’m not as worried about you as I was when I first saw that picture. But I know you’re on your way to being that sick! :) tee hee I think they call it fabricnucleosis.

So, #1 easily amused, eh? Is that why we’re friends?? You’re amused by me…tee hee
#2 Oh yea, Baby! I love my teeth to be cleaned too. I lay there and close my eyes and just enjoy the ride!
#3 Rain!! Love it. I like the sun, but it’s too hot, and besides, the cute little critters like salamanders come out in the rain.
#4 I suppose it depends on how old the kids are. Well, no, I don’t want to ride on a school bus with any kids.
#5 Maybe you have that ADD Michelle was talking about on her blog!
#6 I love grocery shopping. It’s the only shopping I can totally let loose and not worry about how much I spend. And I’m a smeller too. Oh, we just found one of TJ’s organic sham/cond. Yummy! And it makes our hair super soft.
#7 I have “spots” in many different places. Lucky for me, my parking spot WAYYY out there at Target is always open. :)
Oh, by the way, Does the T-man know about that studio you have been visiting and wanting and setting goals to have???

  28. The fabulous lindiepindie allegedly said:

Just beautiful, Monica. Thanks for sharing the pictures!

I’ve never thought about the dentist that way - I’ll have a new take on those 30 glorious minutes next time. :o)

  29. The fabulous Suzie Sews allegedly said:

WOW that fabric wall is amazing…
    Suzie Sews

  30. The fabulous Angelina allegedly said:

Holy crap. Holy crap. Holy crap.

I simultaneously love that huge shelf of perfectly folded color arranged fabric and feel fear well up in me at the sight of it…it’s just too perfect.

That is some incredible dedication to the art of fabric folding.

  31. The fabulous Sandy allegedly said:

Oh My God! Folded fabrics to dream of. Okay, I tried this folding method & now I’m hooked. Off to the fabric mess for some fold time, darned you anyway : )

  32. The fabulous sharon allegedly said:

OMG!!! That fabric is to die for. I thought I had the 30’s but whoa baby. I’m putting mine in a bookcase like that. That is the neatest thing I think I’ve seen in a sewing room. You just want to sit and look at it for hours.

As for the dentist thing. I HATE it!!!! Although I must say I think I have the best looking dentist around. He can spend hours looking in my mouth I wouldnt care. Just no tools please.I’m not into that heavy machinery they use.

  33. The fabulous Jessica allegedly said:

Sharon- I have the same dentist issue…in fact, all of my dentists have been cuties, how does that happen? Maybe I subconsciously seek them out? hm. Well, at least it makes me want to go to the dentist.

Monica - Um….what were we talking about? Fabric? I mean….wow. I’m sure I read that post with a glazed look on my face. As for your weirdness, I cannot stand too much sun. By the end of the summer I’m completely depressed. Fall is where it’s at! In late September every year I do something to congratulate myself for getting through another arduous summer, last year it was a Paul Simon concert, this year we’re heading to Yellowstone. Give me some nice rain, preferably on a tin roof and I’m a happy girl.

Oh…and I used to stand in the middle of the aisle on the school bus and pretend I was surfing through the dips, bumps and curves. Love that.

  34. The fabulous janice allegedly said:

Love of super fabulous 30s fabric stash. So jealous! It’s very beautiful!

  35. The fabulous Jenny-up the hill allegedly said:

I agree that a good cozy rain is nice!

Thanks for all the fabric photos and links! Just beatuiful.

  36. The fabulous mary allegedly said:

I love your fabric all folded up… It looks so inviting - just sitting up there all pretty waiting to be made into beautiful quilts.

  37. The fabulous Sonya allegedly said:

    Must touch fabric….must touch fabric!

  38. The fabulous Connie allegedly said:

I was wondering to myself if the stash photos were real. Wow, I call that a Stash with a capital S. All 30’s…imagine that…she must LOVE 30’s repros…and who wouldn’t? Mmmmmmmmm…so beautiful all folded and stacked up so perfectly! I loved your list and yes I did read it, every word. And in case I haven’t yet commented previously (I can’t remember!) I got the magazine because your quilt was featured! It’s so great and I hope to make one someday!

  39. The fabulous kathleen allegedly said:

What a gorgeous studio she has, I love how she complimented the aqua with orange accents… and whoa… that fabric stash is unbelievable. :)

I’m missing the rain too… I never would of thought!

  40. The fabulous Cottage Magpie allegedly said:

Oh, wait, was there something else? Words or something? Mmmmmm…..fabric….

Anyway–can I say just that I am SO FREAKIN’ JEALOUS of that monumental 30’s stash! LOVE it. And I also love rain (except when I’m picnicking) and Whole Paycheck (when I’m smelling things). And BTW, I love the fresh new look with the aqua here! Nice!

I, for one, was totally reading your words (interrupted by sharp intakes of breath at each picture) because so many of these points rang true for me…except for the radio station part, ’cause I’m in L.A….and I don’t like Adam Carola. But my husband does! XO

  51. The fabulous Tinuviel allegedly said:

Wow! I was just ogling the fabric, wishing I could fondle it all, and thinking “I have that one and that one … oh and I like that one, want some of that one and that one …

And I love Anna Lena’s too. Big Karen Snyder fan. Her shop is great if you like 30’s repros, and the fudge keeps my husband happy. The cranberry fudge is awesome! Long Beach, WA is a great place to visit.
