High on the crafty crack again…
March 21st, 2007
Just when I think I’ve got a grip on my current projects coming to completion, there I go blogging and see the latest rage - Grannies. I don’t know how to crochet and couldn’t read those Einsteinishy instructions to save my life, and yarn is not my medium… but then… OMG… there, on Jenny’s blog were her grannies and I just got that crafting tingle when I saw them. There’s also a big Granny Along sweeping blogland (and OMG… you SHOULD SEE the grannies being made!).
I don’t even know if I’m making the grannies correctly - but what the heck, I’m on crafty crack! I picked my colors from my IKEA lamp and pillow. At first I was shy about using red with bright pink, but both those colors are in the lampshade/pillow - and you know, they work well together. Those Swede’s know what they are doing!
So far I’m having a lot fun with this and fun to do something out of my element, but I have to say for me I’m not hooked (pun intended, HA). I’m missing my fabric already. Dear sweet cotton love.
UPDATED: Those of you trying to resist… look away. Umm. You’re still reading this. LOOK AWAY! Ok, they’re not looking. Autum sent me a link to a GREAT tute at Crochet Cabana. THERE ARE PHOTOS and words! Looking at the instructions, I see I’ve been doing THREE things wrong, most important my error when changing colors. My new enlightenment is going to make this so much easier!
I’ve also been wanting to try that ripple stitch, and am so clueless on how to. I’ve googled tutes, but it’s been all Greek to me. Autum said she found videos on YouTube. I’m going to look for them and post them. Thank you Autum!
UPDATED, again: Here is what I found on YouTube. If anyone knows of more videos, I’ll be happy to post them here!

Dear sweet YARN love!! What do you mean you can’t crochet? Your squares look fabulous!
March 21st, 2007Awesome Granny Squares! I had kicked that monkey off my back years ago… Damn you cute Granny Squares! As if I didn’t spend enough money of fabric, yarn is sure to be a purchase soon. *sigh*
March 21st, 2007Shoot, it sure looks like you’re crocheting to me!!! It looks awesome! I have a feeling I’ll be sucked into the yarn world yet…
March 21st, 2007THERE’S my pillow! I thought it was lost under a giant pile of fabric, but I see it’s at your house now. I’ve been dissed by a pillow!
March 21st, 2007OHMYGOSH WHAT THE HECK!!! I just don’t know who you are anymore Monica! I’m totally resisting those granny squares as I spent many years making fun of them. I’m not EVEN looking at the granny along site.. I’M NOT AND YOU CAN’T MAKE ME.
March 21st, 2007Wait…what? You don’t know how to crochet? I’m so confused. ;-) Those little granny squares are SO cute and love the colors! Yeah, I can’t read those d*mn instructions either. They’re like hieroglyphs, except at least with those there’s a cohesive story line.
March 21st, 2007Oh, I fear it’s too late. You’ve been sucked in. :D I finally figured it out and made one and am. . . over it. It kills my wrists to be honest.
RESIST the urge, Pam. Heh.
March 21st, 2007These are beautiful! I love the colors together. I have an afghan from my granny - probably queen size and it is just one GIANT granny square. I love it - she made it for me for my 8th birthday.
March 21st, 2007Oooh, they’re so CUTE. I’m jealous because unlike you, who say you can’t make them but clearly CAN, I seriously can’t. Don’t even know which end of a crochet hook to hold.
March 22nd, 2007Very cute. And, yea, whatever…you can’t crochet. OK. Looks to me like you can! I love that pillow. Leave it to IKEA…only about a week and I’ll be sucking in that sweet IKEA air! Pam, we’re all backing you girl! RESIST!!! :)
March 22nd, 2007I am trying SOOO hard not to drink the granny square Kool-aid. I fear I am just putting off the inevitable. I am just torn between the grannies, and the ripples. Decisions, decisions…
March 22nd, 2007What sweet comments! Thank you! But you guys don’t see the backs! And there’s a reason for that. :)
March 22nd, 2007::sigh:::
I bought cotton yarn and hooks just last week. I could no longer resist. I aspire/desire/obsess about the ripple quilt at Posey and elsewhere.
Glad I’m not the only one.
Woop on the link to directions! I have been struggling by myself on this, and my mother wont be in town for a month or so and I was hating to have to wait for help.
Now I just have to convince her that getting me a Mimi for my early birthday gift would be a really swell idea. I just have to hide the granddaughter for an hour so she doesn’t try to weasel in on my game.
March 22nd, 2007Be careful I hear this can be very addicting! Consider yourself warned! LOL
Have fun, Monica!
March 22nd, 2007I think you’re crazy if you say you can’t crochet. I claim to the have the skill but am nowhere good enough to tackle the grannies. :)
March 22nd, 2007But I am intreged but…MUST RESIST PULL TO ADD MORE TO THE INFAMOUS LIST!
Dang it! I’m seeing this everywhere too and I would love to learn how to do them…but I can’t do it right now and by the time I’m ready (in 2030 no doubt) everyone will be so over them they will actually be embarrasses by their granny squares and I’ll be saying “where is everyone?”
March 22nd, 2007Oh man… I wish I could have seen your warnings beforehand!!!! Though, I’m so ready to stop and get back to my fabric element…. but on the other hand - I can’t seem to stop either! A bad drug… a very, very bad drug. Curse you grannie squares, curse you!
Too make matter worse, seeing Posey’s ripple afghan too is driving me insane. Not gonna do it. Nope…
March 22nd, 2007Good for you, you look like a pro! No Mimi yet?!
March 22nd, 2007I love those bright colors of the granny squares. And I swear, if one more person posts about these, I’m going to have to teach myself to make one. It’s madness I tell you!
